Adding closed captions or open captions

CapCut is a free video editor for your phone or desktop. It’s a fast a free way to add open captions (‘burned on’) to your MP4 video file.
Adobe Premier Pro is a professional editing tool. One of the high-end features is its ability to use AI to autogenerate a transcript file. You can edit and format this file and export the captions ‘burned on’ to the video (open captions) or as a ‘sidecar file’ (closed captions). The closed captions (.SRT file) can be uploaded to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, or Linkedin.

Other editing apps

iMovie and VN are my 2 top recommendations for free editing apps. The reason these are the best place to start is because you can add cutaway footage over the top of your main narrative which means you can ‘show and tell’ at the same time.

If you already pay a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, it might be worth learning how to edit on Adobe Rush. You can use this app on your phone just like the above editors. But on to of this you can synch your video project to the cloud allowing you to start an edit on your phone and complete it on a desktop or hand it over to another team member for completion.

Finally, lovers of Apple products should have a look at LumaFusion. This editing app can do everything. It really is as good as a desktop editor.
