How a local newspaper works

Published by Colin Kelly on January 9, 2025January 9, 2025

When was the last time you looked inside your local newspaper? It might have gone through some big changes since you last bought a physical copy, but there’s a good chance it still exists.

If you’re one of our media training, podcast or video production clients there’s a good chance at some point local newspapers might be interested in what you’re doing. They might turn up or phone with some questions one day, or there might be times when you would quite like them to help draw attention to something you’re involved in.

Local news has certainly changed and had its difficulties but it still exists and is highly valued by the public. One of the key positions within many local newspapers is the ‘Local Democracy Reporter’. You’ll often see their byline beside stories they’ve covered.

In this episode of the Comsteria Powerful Communication podcast, our Managing Director and media trainer Colin Kelly looks inside today’s edition of the Paisley Daily Express (Colin’s local newspaper) and discussed how the Local Democracy Reporting Service works and why it matters.
