Ayrshire mum wants pee, poo and periods in election manifestos
An Ayrshire entrepreneur is challenging the £3 billion pound disposable hygiene market with a Scottish made, eco friendly alternative that’s winning converts across the UK and beyond.
Kerry-Anne Quinn is founder and managing director of Kilwinning based TCS-eco. The company produces the widest range of cloth pads, period pants, knickers and incontinence briefs in the world, using mostly natural fibres and minimal plastic to create products that can last years rather than hours.
A trained microbiologist and immunologist, Quinn founded TCS-eco from her home workshop in 2011 after questioning the chemicals and waste linked to disposable sanitary products. What started as a small-scale project while raising her children has grown into a six-figure business, exporting internationally and employing a small team in Ayrshire.
“We need a national conversation about periods and leaks ahead of next year’s Holyrood election” says Quinn. “And people should refuse to accept poorly fitting, uncomfortable, greenwashed alternatives that provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Scotland led the way on free period products, but most of what’s supplied is still disposable. It’s time to take the next step — making reusables part of the mainstream conversation. They’re healthier, cheaper long-term, and far better for the planet.”
TCS-eco hopes Scotland’s political parties will find space for the issue in their election manifestos and commit to reusable options being included in Scotland’s national period product provision.
“Every reusable pad sold replaces hundreds of disposables,” says Quinn. “This is a small, practical change with a huge environmental impact — and Scotland is perfectly placed to lead the way.”
